Overview

sabu is the 4th-generation descendant of King Naemul, the 17th King of Silla. His family name is Kim, and he is also known as "Taejong." He had unsurpassed martial arts skills and resourcefulness and played a pivotal role in politics, military, and academic fields for three generations spanning the reigns of King Jijeung, King Beupheung, and King Jinheung, wielding powerful influence. He is best remembered today for his role in subjugating the island state of Usanguk, which was composed of modern-day Ulreungdo and Dokdo Islands, in 512 after reforming the ship operation system and building up military power for seven years after he was appointed governor of the new Siljik province of Samcheok in 505. This clearly shows that Ulreungdo and Dokdo Islands belong to Korean territory. The East Sea Maritime King Isabu History & Cultural Festival in Samcheok pays tribute to Isabu, who had the dream and aspiration to conquer the sea when he was appointed first governor of Siljik province, and highlights Isabu as one of the revered maritime kings including Admiral Lee Soon-shin and Jangbogo who protected the South Sea and the East Sea. This festival also seeks to promote Koreans' love of Dokdo island amid Japan's renewed claim to Dokdo recently. The Samcheok East Sea Maritime King Isabu History & Cultural Festival honors Isabu, the General of Silla, sets a new milestone for the future maritime culture and development of tourism, and serves as a model that brings tourists together. This festival provides a window into his lofty vision to conquer the sea and protect Dokdo island.
